Contraluz Mezcal Cristalino is sourced by mezcalero Don Carlos León Monterrubio from producers in the Tlacolula de Matamoros region of Oaxaca. Don Carlos transforms the joven Maguey Espadin (Agave angustifolia) mezcal into an aged cristalino. Originally, releases of this mezcal were aged for more than 12 months in American oak barrels and then filtered. As of 2022, the process involves resting the mezcal for 6 months in charred American oak barrels before being filtered through activated charcoal. Contraluz debuted in Mexico in 2016 and arrived in the US in 2022 at $60 a bottle. Contraluz claims to be the world’s first cristalino mezcal. In 2022, Colombian singer Maluma (Juan Luis Londoño Arias) joined the Contraluz team as the face of the brand as it eyes expansion. Mezcal Contraluz claims to be “the only clear aged mezcal” and as of 2019, that seems to be true. Mezcal Contraluz is available in Mexico City other popular destinations in Mexico.
